Save State - PS Plus Enters the Chat

Welcome to the first Save State newsletter! Here I’ll be sharing updates on what’s happening at The Screen Zone with small snippets of the latest articles of the week. Beyond that, the world of video games and film also saw some big updates from the franchises we love this week, and I’ll be breaking them down to the important stuff you need to know.

Every Cool Game I Tried at Steam Next Fest 2022

This will be short. In case you didn’t know, Steam hosts an annual demo fest featuring hundreds of developers giving out small samples of their games to try for free. This year’s Next Fest saw some cool games like Anger Foot and Metal: Hellsinger join the party. I tried a total of 5 games during the event, primarily because I only started downloading stuff in the last two days 🥲

Is the New PlayStation Plus Worth it For Indian Gamers?

Sony finally launched its revamped PlayStation Plus subscription service in India, but is it worth the investment for local gamers? The short answer? Yes, I think it is worth it. While the game library isn’t as big as found internationally, it’s still extremely competitive with that of Xbox Game Pass. The presence of big hitters like Returnal, Spider-Man, and other PlayStation exclusives make it worth the investment for any new gamer. In time, I hope to see more of those games added to the service, and bringing PS3 games to India is a must, be it through streaming or through hardware emulation.

PlayStation Plus vs Xbox Game Pass in India — What’s the Better Value?

I compared the number and subjective quality of games on both Xbox Game Pass (for console & PC) with that in the new PlayStation Plus in India. Local gamers won't see a big chunk of games make their way on to both services here, getting about half of the promised library from PlayStation. Despite that, the numbers indicate the number of games in both services to be neck and neck. Xbox Game Pass will continue to be a better match for those expecting third-party games to hit the service frequently, and PS Plus is great for those starting their gaming journey on a PS4 or PS5 console, with better exclusive games. Pricing though is a different matter, with the highest tiers of both services costing about the same on an annual basis.

Alright then, with that done, here’s some stuff you probably shouldn’t miss out on if you want to stay on top of your pop-culture class:

  • Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Crisis Core Remaster Revealed - Square Enix celebrated the 25th anniversary of FFVII and revealed that a really pretty remaster of Crisis Core is coming to all consoles and PC this winter! Following that, a new teaser for FFVII Remake Part 2, now called FFVII Rebirth, was unleashed to the public.

  • Indus Gameplay Revealed - Pune-based SuperGaming, developer of MaskGun and Silly Royale, released some juicy new footage of its upcoming desi battle royale Indus. The game is targeting a 2022 release.

  • PS Plus July 2022 Games Leaked - As is becoming a tradition now, Dealabs user billbil-kun has leaked the lineup of free games for PS Plus in July: Crash Bandicoot 4, Man of Medan, and Arcadegeddon.

  • From Software In Final Development Stages of Next Game - The Elden Ring developer confirmed that it is nearing the end of development for its next game, heavily rumoured to be a new instalment of Armored Core. The developer is also working on multiple new projects at the same time.

  • NFT game Ashfall announced by Liithos - PlayStation veterans Michael Mumbauer and John Garvin (Days Gone) have announced a new open-world game Ashfall, which is in development for PC and consoles, using web 3.0 cryptocurrency HBAR.

  • Cyberpunk 2077 Developer was Misled by External QA Team - This one’s bizarre. According to Upper Echelon Gamers, QA company Quantic Labs over-exaggerated many key details about itself to CD Projekt Red during Cyberpunk’s development, leading to many bugs being missed out by the developer.

  • Obi-Wan Kenobi Finale - The Star Wars spinoff miniseries came to an end with the long-awaited showdown between Obi-Wan and Darth Vader. Personally, I found the end not worth the nearly 6-hour journey.

  • Top Gun: Maverick Crosses $1 Billion worldwide - Tom Cruise’s latest blockbuster broke the sonic barrier, becoming the actor’s biggest movie ever by joining the billion-dollar club, officially becoming the highest-grossing movie of 2022.

  • The Boys ‘Herogasm’ Shocks All - The sixth episode of the current season of Amazon’s The Boys satisfied everyone with some long-awaited showdowns. Unsurprisingly though, the superhero-orgy-filled episode was heavily censored here in India.
